Associations in the Big Leagues
Posted by Rebecca Rolfes on May 20, 2008

American Business Media has no association publishing committee. http://www.mediapace.com/

Folio only added an association publishing track to its annual convention in relatively recent years. http://www.foliomag.com/blogs.

The American Society of Association Executives has a communications professional interest group but no list serv or other service focused on association publishing. http://blogs.asaecenter.org/Acronym/?navItemNumber=20125

Speaking at the Folio show earlier this year, Frank Anton, CEO of Hanley Wood, said that trade magazines were the “minor leagues” of publishing, which, by my estimate, relegates association publishing to locker room attendant status.

When ABC came out with the list of top 25 magazines by paid and verified circulation, however, five of them were association publications. The two highest circulation magazines in the country are from associations, both from the AARP. The five (two from AARP, two from AAA and one from the American Legion) have a combined circulation of 57,134,311.

So much for being in the bush leagues.
